An Introduction to the River Tay

The River Tay, in Perthshire is considered by many to offer the finest Salmon Fishing in Scotland.

It drains the largest catchment area of 2800 square miles. On its way from Loch Tay this noble, majestic river passes through the picturesque villages of Aberfeldy, Grandtully and Dunkeld before reaching the tidal waters at Perth.

In the lower part of the valley the scenery is of pleasant arable farmland, the middle consists of a stunning woodland setting, whereas the upper reaches present wonderful picturesque highland scenery with a wild rapid river.

The River Tay is a large river by any standards, with the lower and middle river, depending upon height, being fished by boats and bank, whereas the upper river is considerably smaller in width with better streams, and those anglers wishing to fish fly, find this area to be a more manageable size.

In addition to the main river, anglers can select any of the excellent tributaries: the River Earn and River Tummel being the most productive, with good Autumn Salmon catches and superb Summer Sea Trout Fishing ( particularly the River Earn).

Such is the sheer size of the River Tay; to a large extent it is not water dependent and as such, Salmon can enter on most days of the season.

Spring Fish enter the Tay from November onwards and are distributed over the whole system by the opening day of the season on the 15th January.

Large Salmon abound on this system, not only has it produced the British record, Miss Ballantines 64 pounder, but a list of other notable fish can be found by clicking here.

Pitnacree / Balnabeggan

River Tay - Perthshire Grandtully

Dunkeld: 12 Miles

Perth: 27 Miles

We are delighted to offer for the sixth consecutive year the fishings belonging to Pitnacree and Balnabeggan Estates. The fishings are combined in order to give a double bank beat.

Situated immediately downstream from Grandtully bridge, the fishings comprise of approximately 0.75 miles of double bank with 0.25 miles of additional fishing on the South Bank.

There are 7 named pools within this beat and a variety of fly, spinning and bait fishing. Access to the fishings is extremely good as the road runs close by throughout the length of the fishings. The beat fishes well at all heights and in particular high water. There is a new fishing hut and considerable improvements have been carried out.

Being below the rapids at Grandtully, water temperature can induce fish to build up in numbers. Catches during the spring , after the snow melt can be spectacular, as Salmon are very reluctant to ascend the rapids above.

Of all the Strathtay beats, Pitnacree is considered to be the most productive.

With the relatively mild winters, Salmon do not wait long in the lower beats as they make their way into the Loch. As such, fish can be taken throughout the spring and in particular April and May. Given water, September and October shall also produce numerous fish.

January - March

£20/rod/day

April - May

£50/rod/day

June - August

£30/rod/day

September

£50/rod/day

October

£60/rod/day

Ghillie and tackle hire available.

All prices exclude VAT at the standard rate.

Baldarroch by Murthly - River Tay, Perthshire

Dunkeld: 6 Miles

Perth: 9 Miles

Very seldom are we given the opportunity to gain access to a ‘new’ stretch of salmon water on the famous River Tay. Baldarroch Estate, by Murthly has recently changed hands, and for the first time the Salmon fishing within the estate is being offered for let on a daily basis. The fishing has been previously let on a very irregular ad hoc basis, being very lightly fished by the previous owner.

Baldarroch is situated upstream of the world famous beats such as Islamouth, Meikleour and Kercock; and downstream from Burnbane, Glendelvine and the Murthly Castle fishings. The fishings are very private, secluded and in an enchanting picturesque area abundant with wildlife. The fishings are strategically very well located, and would be defined as a lower beat of the middle section of the river. The neighbouring beats regularly produce excellent catches, and although previous records are incomplete, this section would appear to offer considerable scope.

The beat is located on the south side of the river, right hand bank looking downstream, and offers a variety of fly and spinning throughout its 3/4 mile course. There is a very experienced full time ghillie included, complete with boat and a splendid fishing/luncheon hut. In order to give maximum pleasure, the number of rods is restricted to a total of 3 per day.

The current owner has transformed the fishings, having carried out considerable improvements, including obtaining professional advice in the creation of additional lies within the beat.

Bill Sutherland, the resident ghillie, has spent a lifetime involved  with Salmon angling, including a long spell at Royal Balmoral. As you would expect, service in this estate is second to none.

Costs per rod per day including ghillie are as follows:-

15 January - 31 March

£50.00

01 April - 30 May

£75.00

01 June - 31 August

£100.00

01 September - 15 October

£150.00

All prices exclude VAT at the standard rate, but include the services of a very experienced ghillie and boat.
