Early Spring Break (January to March)

Spring fishing always ensures anglers of sufficient water during this period. Unfortunately many of the anglers who live further south, look upon this period as being bleak and miserable due to snow falls and winter conditions. Whilst it is true that the temperature is probably a few degrees colder than the south of England, conditions are not as bad as perceived. Indeed, during 1996 the first two weeks of January saw a water temperature on River Tay of 46 degrees F.

There are also a number of fairly mild days during this period, resulting in any snow on the high ground melting quickly, giving rise to good water levels.

The quality of Tay Springers is legendary, with large powerful specimens caught throughout this period, particularly in the upper beats as they make their way into the Loch

After a Spring day at the river, what better than to relax by a log fire, perhaps sampling a selection of Scottish Malts.

Spring / Summer Break (April to August)

Large runs of Salmon and Grilse wish to run the system during this period. Historically, in the low summer water, most Salmon were intercepted by netting operations in the estuary, however with the elimination of netting anglers are now enjoying greater sport throughout this period. with the river reducing in size due to summer conditions, fly fishing becomes the pinnacle of the sport.

During this period success is often to be found at the extremities of the day, and our ghillies / guides are happy to assist at these timescales. During the summer, anglers may wish to try for Sea Trout in the evening, which can be provided if required.

Autumn Break (September to October)

With netting stations removed Salmon have a free passage on their ascension upstream, and given sufficient water, all beats can be populated with fish. This can be an extremely productive time, and is a period long awaited by anglers each year.

Sea Trout fishing has ceased and all effort at this time directed towards Autumn Salmon.
